Haha. I didn't expect I'd spring right to mind. My maiden name's Neumann and we've only met a couple of times since graduation. Once at Anthony's, I believe and another time at Old Chicago. I had completely forgotten about it until I came across your journal, but you had just applied for the Peace Corps and were all excited.

I am trying to organize a Peace Corps LJ chat…
I placed a poll in the main communities… (Hope you don’t mind)
Based on what the Poll says I will set up a time and date. We’ll see if there is a decent response (and if it looks self-sustaining). If there is, I would love it if you guys could add a blurb about it in your user info.

The first chat will most likely take place next week. (I’ll have a post/reminder in each community)

Hey Melody, Love reading your blog. It's the only way to find out what I'm missing, and I do miss being there with you guys. Spoke to my host family today and it made me cry. Things here at home have been pretty bad and I have been working two jobs, day and night. You hang in there and say hi to everyone for me. Has anyone else left our group? Make copies of everything and know that everytime you feel like you are frustrated beyond belief, the only advice you'll ever hear is "have more patience". This will most likely irritate you more! Dont ever feel like you are doing Peace Corps a favor by signing up. It's a job and if you want a certain region, fight for it. Or if you get your invite and it's a country you dont want to go to b/c of safety, fear, location...dont go. Stay positive and upbeat!

The application is indescribely frustrating but I feel like it was totally worth it to be here! I am really have a great experience in Bulgaria and I'm glad I stuck with the process. Just remember, the acceptance rate of pc looks low but that is mostly b/c people gave up on the application process. You can do it!

If anyone gets an offer for these program, I would recommend
considering deferring for the next available program; as a current
volunteer serving in the Gambia, I have found the programs to be
lacking in organizational components necessary to effectively bring
about change and successful development (ie: volunteer site development
and counterpart selection). I would also say that the Gambia as a
culture is over-run with NGOs, and has developed a dependence on (free)
imported recources that creates difficulty in establishing a self-
sustaining project for advancement. It is a wonderful place to live,
however my aspirations for PC work was to have a more definitive role
and be an agent for change; therefore I have not enjoyed my placement
as much as others whose main focus was for cultural integration and
exchange.

Did you see this? Sound like someone wanted to change the world and has realized it doesn’t work that way. Bitter people should go home… Advising people to turn down an invite to the Gambia because the program is disorganized and Gambia is dependent on NGOs??? Hello this would apply to most PC countries.
